In 2017, our Players identified some of the most pressing needs in the areas they were passionate about helping. Big League Impact's network of player-leaders collaborated to put together a multi-region program that built an orphanage and school that now serves over 500 young Haitians, and added vocational training for sustainable farming in Northern Haiti. In the Southern part of the country, Striking Out Poverty applied the funds raised towards rebuilding the hurricane-battered community with a focus on sustainable farming and training. Finally, 25% of the funds were used to support food banks in the US—in Flint, Michigan; Atlanta; and in St. Louis.

Create a sustainable farm ecosystem at IDADEE

A former St. Louis Cardinal purchased 30 acres of land with the intention of building the IDADEE orphanage and school, and using it as a training ground for sustainable farming and vocational training. Big League Impact's team saw the land and founder Adam Wainwright put up a match for fellow baseball players to join him in his 2017 Striking Out Poverty Campaign. The farm is set to break ground in late 2018.

Repair farms in Southern Haiti

50% of the funds raised from the 2017 Striking Out Poverty campaign were donated to assisting 240 farmers in Southern Haiti in getting back on their feet after Hurricane Matthew. Demonstration plots were created and each farmer received 15 pounds of bean seeds as well as food crop seedlings. Additionally, 14 community centers were trained on the values and techniques of community development and leadership.

Food banks are one of the most efficient and effective charities in the United States. 25% of the funds from the inaugural Striking Out Poverty campaign was split between three domestic food banks: The Atlanta Community Food Bank, The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (Flint, MI), and Operation Food Search in St. Louis.
